Trends in Health Coverage Under State-Based Marketplaces

TargetHIV

The year 2024 saw over 21 million people enroll in the health insurance marketplace, the highest number to date under this Affordable Care Act program. Reasons include more affordability options and transitions during the Medicaid unwinding, post-COVID.

Of this number, over 5 million enrolled in health coverage in the 19 states that run their own state-based marketplaces (SBMs). (Other states offer coverage through the federal HealthCare.gov). Trends in coverage by SBMs are explored in more detail in 2024 State Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment: Key Insights and Trends from the National Academy for State Health Policy.
