Incredibly, one in five Americans visits an emergency department each year, according to Most Frequent Reasons for Emergency Department Visits, 2018, an AHRQ report.
With such frequency, ER visits seem like potential opportunities for reaching people at risk for or living with HIV. Reportedly, a significant number of STI and HIV cases in various California jurisdictions are reported in ER settings. However, the report does not provide such insights as ER visits are reported by broader categories, like the most frequent reasons (e.g., respiratory infections, abdominal pain).
