CDC Slides Document HIV Mortality Declines

Wednesday, August 29, 2018

Chart after chart after chart shows the same thing: dramatic drops in deaths from HIV infection, no matter the population, gender, age or geographic location. CDC's Mortality Slide Series Through 2015 serves as a reminder of possibly unprecedented success against a public health challenge. Line graphs show cliff-like drops in mortality starting around mid-1995 in response to new and effective combination antiretroviral therapies, supported by HIV systems of care. The slide below shows the contrast in HIV deaths compared to other leading causes of mortality among the 25-44 age group. (See additional Mortality Data from CDC's National Vital Statistics System.)

Viral suppression among Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients has increased steadily, from 69.5% in 2010 to 84.9% in 2016.
