Pharmacy-Based Naloxone Dispensing — United States, 2012–2018

An online continuing education course is available on dispensing naloxone to curb the effects of an opioid drug overdose. The course, Vital Signs: Pharmacy-Based Naloxone Dispensing — United States, 2012–2018. It is offered by the CDC and Medscape and seeks to increase usage of naloxone, which has increased in recent years but lags far behind need.

Per the MMWR Vital Signs: Pharmacy-Based Naloxone Dispensing — United States, 2012–2018. "Despite increases, in 2018, only one naloxone prescription was dispensed for every 69 high-dose opioid prescriptions. The lowest rates of naloxone dispensing were observed in the most rural counties."
