gonorrhea guideline update single dose

Sexual Transmitted Diseases guidelines have been revised to recommend "a single 500 mg intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone for uncomplicated gonorrhea." This change from dual to monotherapy was prompted by concerns over the impact of antibiotic drugs and the potential for emergence of drug resistant gonococcal strains.

The December 18, 2020 MMWR, Update to CDC's Treatment Guidelines for Gonococcal Infection, 2020, provides a detailed overview of the data analysis undertaken in recent years to revise the recommendation, which updates the 2015 Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines.
