Kansas City MO Bike Program: Transportation Option for People with HIV

Tuesday, December 31, 2019

TargetHIV

A program in Kansas City (Missouri) provides free bikes to clients living with HIV so that they can more readily travel to their medical and case management appointments, get to jobs, and do what most of us do every day. Spotlight: Bike Exchange describes how the project came about and how it works.

The Spotlight is the latest publication under the HRSA-funded SPNS initiative, The HIV, Housing & Employment Project, which supports development of interventions to coordinate HIV care, housing, and employment services for people with HIV. The Spotlight summarizes:

  • Challenges (e.g., transportation barriers faced by clients, data on bicycle accidents and fatalities in the city)
  • Strategies like how to secure free bikes and transport them to clients
  • Next steps including bike education and securing more bikes for more clients
