Medicaid Broadening Focus on Social Determinants of Health

TargetHIV

It is not much of a surprise to agencies funded by HRSA's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) that addressing housing, employment and other Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) can greatly improve health outcomes. That's the Ryan White model of care that has been under development and refinement for decades. Notably, Medicaid agencies are increasingly pursuing care models with SDOH in mind in managed care plans, which covered the majority of Medicaid recipients. Addressing Social Drivers of Health With Medicaid Managed Care, a blog by the National Conference of State Legislatures, discusses this trend.

The blog also references a document from The Commonwealth Fund, Review of Evidence for Health-Related Social Needs Interventions, that summarizes in table format a large number of studies on the cost and care outcomes associated with SDOH care delivery.
