State Medicaid Programs Explore Oral Care in Health Homes

Tuesday, August 7, 2018

Strategies being undertaken by five state Medicaid programs to include oral health care and payment for those services in chronic care models are explored in the Strategies to Incorporate Oral Health into Medicaid Payment and Care Delivery Models for Chronic Medical Conditions Report.

The report, by the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), examined Medicaid health home projects in Alabama, Missouri, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Washington State.

The report reviews the work of these states and lessons learned for other states (e.g., use of data, training of staff)  interested in expanding oral health care to improve health outcomes of individuals with chronic conditions, like HIV and Hepatitis C.
