Part 1: Rolling Hills and Rapid Starts: Addressing Challenges in Prompt Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation in Appalachia
Learn how one rural RWHAP Parts C and D-funded clinic pivoted to telephone intakes to expedite their Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) initiation process for newly diagnosed patients with HIV. The HIV clinician will discuss care and treatment considerations, and the RN will highlight the steps involved in implementing this change in practice.
Learning Objectives
- Review the challenges involved for those living in rural areas who are recently diagnosed with HIV as they enter into care and begin ART.
- Outline the clinical care considerations when opting to start a patient on ART prior to an initial in-person visit.
- Highlight the nursing considerations for guiding a patient to ART initiation via telephone education and counseling.

Part 2: Key Adaptations Made by Clinics Successfully Implementing a Rapid Start Approach to Accelerate ART Initiation
This session will focus on the results of a longitudinal, multi-method evaluation of 14 RWHAP settings implementing rapid start ART over the course of three years under the SPNS Building Capacity to Implement Rapid ART Start for Improved Care Engagement in Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program initiative. This will include factors associated with implementation and improvements in clinical outcomes among clients receiving rapid start compared to those who did not.
Learning Objectives
- Understand why rapid start ART is a priority for clinics serving RWHAP clients.
- Describe factors associated with successful implementation of rapid start ART.

This presentation describes the process used to develop and implement a system-wide approach to iART implementation in Philadelphia.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about the steps in a multi-phase approach to system change for immediate ART implementation.
- Learn about the pre-implementation working group structure and topics covered to prepare HIV care and service providers for future immediate ART implementation.
