Report: HRSA’s Ryan White Response to the Opioid Epidemic

Monday, December 2, 2019

A recent HRSA panel report summarizes steps that are being taken to address HIV and opioid care needs, and what can be done with funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP). The Intersection of HRSA’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and the Opioid Epidemic outlines two dozen ideas on ways to improve substance abuse service delivery for people with HIV who are receiving RWHAP care. Examples include:

  • Use data to determine if there are upticks in patients with substance use disorders in order to plan future responses
  • Make a warm )person-to-person) "handoff" when transitioning people to another service provider, say an HIV clinic to a substance abuse provider
  • Build relationships among key agencies, like substance abuse and HRSA Health Centers
  • Support components of syringe services programs (SSPs), as is allowable under HRSA guidance that is referenced in the report
