North Carolina's HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis Unit, along with Western North Carolina Community Health Services and Carolina Family Health Center -- two federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) -- has initiated a pilot rapid antiretroviral treatment (ART) program utilizing carryover funds and a streamlined HIV Medication Assistance Program application process. Oklahoma has been classified by the Department of Health and Human Services as one of the seven states with a high rural HIV burden. Test-and-treat protocols are feasible within high-volume HIV clinics which serve rural and underserved communities to minimize the time to the first appointment to decrease time to viral load suppression.
