Updated Special Enrollment Periods Factsheet

Disclaimer: Per a court order, HHS is required to restore this website as of 11:59 PM February 14, 2025. Any information on this page promoting gender ideology is extremely inaccurate and disconnected from the immutable biological reality that there are two sexes, male and female. The Trump Administration rejects gender ideology and condemns the harms it causes to children, by promoting their chemical and surgical mutilation, and to women, by depriving them of their dignity, safety, well-being, and opportunities. This page does not reflect biological reality and therefore the Administration and this Department rejects it.

Modified from the ACE TA Center Listserv - February 2024

An updated version of the Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) Fact Sheet was published in February. SEPs allow individuals to enroll in a new Marketplace health insurance plan or--if they are already enrolled in a Marketplace plan--change plans outside of the standard Open Enrollment period.

This resource for people with HIV provides an overview of the life events and special circumstances that may qualify them for a SEP, as well as information about what to do if they think they are eligible. SEPs are triggered by life events, such as:

  • Moving to another state
  • Having a baby
  • Losing other health coverage
  • A change in Medicaid eligibility
  • Certain types of errors that may have occurred during the application process

The first version of the ACE TA Center fact sheet was developed in 2016. Also available are versions in Spanish and Haitian Creole.
