Community Health Workers (CHWs) were added to the care team to work with clients with poor treatment adherence and not viral load suppression (VLS). Clients benefited from CHW services that contributed to VLS in over 50% of the clients assigned to them. CHWs are vital in ending the epidemic in challenging client populations

Telemedicine has emerged to provide medical care to those in rural settings. This model has not yet been utilized by Ryan White clinics at academic centers. We use a multidisciplinary approach to conduct visits with patients via live videoconferencing. There are multiple challenges, but there is potential for increasing access.

Using three HIV telehealth pilot projects as case studies, telehealth leaders from the Medical University of South Carolina—a HRSA-funded Telehealth Center of Excellence—will discuss how telehealth might be leveraged to improve access to HIV prevention and care. Georgia’s telehealth/telemedicine and Project ECHO programs aim to identify and tackle barriers faced by urban and rural environments. Telehealth offers patients a virtual way of meeting with their care providers, while also improving patient engagement and care plan adherence.
